For the first time since the war between Hamas and Israel broke out nearly four weeks ago, civilians trapped inside the besieged Gaza Strip have been allowed to escape, crossing into Egypt.

The deal was reportedly brokered by Qatar in co-ordination with the United States.

20 Australians were among the more than 300 foreign passport holders finally allowed to leave.

Foreign affairs officials remain in touch with 65 Australian citizens registered to leave the enclave.
