Building good habits

What are some ways to build good habits going into 2024?

1. Habit Stacking

2. Habit Tracking

3. Accountability

????Habit stacking:

Habit stacking increases the likelihood that you’ll stick with a habit by stacking your new behavior on top of an old one. This process can be repeated to chain numerous habits together, each one acting as the cue for the next.

????Habit tracking:

Track your most important habit that you want to have. This is sometimes tough to do because it's 2 habits that you have to build -- the habit you want and the fact that you are having to track it.

BUT, this will greatly help position your mind to the PROCESS of your habit... also, you will find you will have streaks of accomplishing the habit - and this will also make you want to keep the habit going because of the simple action of being able to check this off (there are tangible ways to do this to by stacking small constructive rewards with the habit).

Have a plan in place too for when you break your streak of (in this case) missing a run or a workout - have strategies in place to make it easy to get back on track.

???? Accountability:

Do NOT underestimate the power of having someone who is in your corner (wants to see you succeed) keep you ACCOUNTABLE.

A good friend, a spouse, a coach, a trainer, someone else who has already built the habit you're looking to build -- and sometimes having something in place to make it HARD for you to not engage in the habits you want to build can be helpful.

Such as "if I don't log my workouts this week" or "if I don't wake up and do ___ ", I will have to "give my spouse $200 to do whatever they would like to do with it and my trainer $100 for not logging my workouts".

Whatever it is in the example above, it should be something that motivates you to press in (it inverts the reward part of behavior change).

Now, you don't have to go to this degree obviously, but whatever form of accountability that truly keeps you on track is something that will help create powerful change when our tendency is to shy away when excuses get in the way.
