Six people were killed Saturday when a small plane travelling from Las Vegas crashed near an airport in Murrieta, Calif., according to authorities. The Cessna Citation 550 was flying in low visibility conditions, and the crash killed all people on board, a National Transportation Safety Board investigator said.

Without confirming the cause of the accident, investigator Elliot Simpson said the plane was preparing to land at the French Valley Airport through a marine cloud layer that had enveloped in the Murrieta area. Poor visibility led the pilot to request a missed-approach flight procedure, used when pilots can't see the runway environment.

According to Simpson, air traffic control granted the request, and the plane missed the runway by about 500 feet (152 metres), bursting into flames on impact and leaving a debris field of about 200 feet (60 meters).

The victims have been identified as Abigail Tellez-Vargas, 33, of Murrieta, Riese Lenders, 25, of Rancho Palos Verdes, Manuel Vargas-Regalado, 32, of Temecula, Lindsey Gleiche, 31, of Huntington Beach, Alma Razick, 51, of Temecula, and Ibrahem Razick, 46, of Temecula.
