Ukrainian authorities say about 30 percent of the country is contaminated by Russian landmines, unexploded ordnance and other explosives, posing a threat to civilian life - and making it off-limits for farming and other uses. According to a survey published last year by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, mines have been detected in 11 of Ukraine's 27 oblasts. Among the most contaminated regions are Mykolaiv, Kherson, Donetsk and Kharkiv. Human Rights Watch points out that Ukrainian forces have also deployed landmines against Russian forces. The area in need of checking and clearing is larger than Greece. DW's Aya Ibrahim travelled to Budy in northern Ukraine to meet some of those taking on this dangerous job.
