The risks of artificial intelligence (AI) to national security and the economy need to be addressed, U.S. President Joe Biden said at a San Francisco event on Tuesday, adding he would seek expert advice on the subject. Biden was also joined by California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

“We’ll see more technological change in the next 10 years than in the last 50 years, and maybe beyond that,” Biden said. “AI is already driving that change, in every part of the American life, often in ways we don’t notice.”

In May, Biden met with CEOs of top artificial intelligence companies, including Microsoft and Alphabet's Google, and made clear they must ensure their products are safe before they are deployed.

Generative artificial intelligence has become contentious this year, with apps such as ChatGPT capturing the public's fancy, sparking a rush among companies to launch similar products they believe will change the nature of work.
