Alberta wildfires: Officials give evacuation update as provincial emergency continues

Fire officials in Alberta provided an update on Sunday after the number of active wildfires in the province steadily increased throughout the day on Saturday, with 110 listed as “active” on the government’s wildfire status map as of 6 p.m. Premiere Danielle Smith also declared a provincial emergency on Saturday.

Smith explained that the declaration “gives the government greater powers to respond to extreme situations,” including the mobilization of additional supports and getting access to emergency funds.

The number of Albertans currently under evacuation has surpassed more than 24,000. So far the largest community evacuated was the town of Edson, located about two hours west of Edmonton. Parts of Yellowhead County were also ordered to evacuate late Friday afternoon, with additional evacuation orders and alerts issued throughout the province on Saturday.
