More than a dozen U.S. states are under air quality alerts, as smoke from hundreds of Canadian wildfires has wafted south of the border.

As of Wednesday morning, New York had the second-worst air quality in the world, according to a ranking of major cities by Swiss air quality technology company IQAir.

Delhi, India’s smog-plagued capital city, topped the list.

New York residents have had mixed reactions to the smoke, showing concern for Canadians amid the devastating wildfire season but also expressing worry about the smoke’s impact on their health.

“If anything, I feel really sad for them that they’re going through this situation,” said one New York resident, Tajuana Nelson.

“What about the haze? Well, I’m a little worried about it,” said another resident, Tim Mulvaney.

So far this year, 2,293 wildfires have already torched 3.8 million hectares of land across Canada and forced 20, 183 people from their homes.
