Freezing temperatures added to the misery for Chinese villagers who lost their homes after a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the region on Monday night.

“I have this electric blanket and quilt now, so it’s warmer,” said Du Daxiu, a 69-year-old man in Haidong City.

“I couldn’t sleep last night. There is nothing we can do. The communist party, the town government, can’t do anything about it because it’s a natural disaster. There is nothing we can do when there is a natural disaster.”

At a relief site, dozens of homeless quake survivors queued outside emergency tents to get food, water and supplies from volunteers.

The earthquake rocked Jishishan county, near the border straddling Gansu and Qinghai provinces.

In Gansu, more than 2-7,000 homes were wrecked and nearly 15,000 houses collapsed, affecting more than 145,000 people. More than 128,000 emergency supplies, including tents, quilts, tent lights and folding beds have been delivered.
