Chinese President Xi Jinping announced his support for a global Olympic truce during the Paris Games on Monday.

On the first day of his state visit to France, Xi stated that "As a permanent member of the Security Council (of the United Nations) and as a responsible country, China is ready to work with France to take the Paris Olympics as an opportunity to call for a global truce during the Paris Olympic Games."

The discussions between Xi and French President Emmanuel Macron focused on trade and international relations, marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

However, Xi's visit was not without controversy, as students for a Free Tibet displayed a "Free Tibet" banner over his motorcade from a bridge in Paris, while Reporters Without Borders activists protested at the Arc de Triomphe.

"It must be recognized that the Chinese President is not like any other president, he is a press freedom predator. 119 journalists are detained by the Chinese regime," Deputy CEO of Reporters Without Borders, Thibaut Britton said.
