Protests broke out in New York City on Thursday, three days after a 30-year-old Black man died after being placed in a chokehold on the subway by another passenger.

According to reports, witnesses alleged Jordan Neely had been panhandling and shouting on the train car. A 24-year-old, later identified as a U.S. Marine, placed the man into a chokehold, eventually rendering him unconscious. Two other men could also be seen on camera appearing to try to restrain Neely's arms.

The medical examiner determined the cause of death to be homicide as a result of a compression of the neck.

People demonstrated both on a subway platform and outside the subway, calling for charges to be laid in Neely's death. The Marine, who was captured on video performing the chokehold, was questioned by police but later released.
