The UN secretary general, António Guterres, said the conflict in Sudan could not be resolved on the battlefield, telling a gathering of the UN security council that prolonged fighting could cause 'years of immense suffering'.

The UN head also called for an immediate ceasefire between the fighting parties, saying: 'I urge all council members and other UN member states and regional organisations with influence to press them to de-escalate tensions and return to the negotiating table immediately.'
