Thousands of earthquakes have thrust the ground upward in places by 1 metre or more. The Icelandic meteorological office said there was a 'significant likelihood' of a volcanic eruption in an area north of Grindavik near the Helgafell mountain. A volcanic system on the Reykjanes peninsula has erupted three times since 2021, after being dormant for 800 years.
