Croatia's ruling conservative Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party won the most seats in parliamentary elections, falling short of the threshold to form a government. The prime minister, Andrej Plenković welcomed the result in a speech to supporters by saying: 'The important thing is that HDZ has for the third time in a row, convincingly won the parliamentary election.' Plenković said he would begin negotiating with other parties to form a government on Friday. A centre-left coalition led by the Social Democrats (SPD) trailed the HDZ despite support from leftwing populist president, Zoran Milanović, who had ignored a court warning requiring him to step down from his position as president, a largely ceremonial role, if he was to take part in the polls.
