Online dating companies are being called on to develop a code of practice to improve safety for users.
If they don't, the federal government says it will create laws to force them to improve.
A recent Australian institute of criminology report found three quarters of online daters had been subject to some kind of online sexual violence in the past five years.
The government says if safety isn't improved, it will develop legislation to regulate the industry.
