During a press conference at a Rabba grocery store in Toronto, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland revealed details about the new "grocery rebate" on Wednesday.

Freeland said that 11 million Canadians will receive the federal government’s one-time compensation benefit immediately, as high food prices and inflation persist across the country.

The rebate will be for low- and modest-income Canadians and families, the Deputy PM said: up to $467 for eligible couples with two children; $234 for single Canadians without children; and $225 for seniors, on average.

Admitting the rebate won't solve all struggling Canadians' problems, Freeland said "The challenge (of) getting through this period of high inflation has been that we've needed to strike a balance," accrediting the amounts to the federal government remaining "fiscally responsible" for their decisions.

Additionally, the Deputy PM announced new support initiatives for Canadians with mortgages, revealing that, as of July 5, a Financial Consumer Agency guideline states that banks and other financial institutions should be providing to Canadians who are struggling with rising mortgage payments.
