Edmonton Police Chief Dale Mcfee provided an update after a violent incident in southeast Edmonton on Friday left a mother and child dead, according to authorities. Mcfee said that the suspect was in the hospital on life support, and confirmed that the unnamed suspect was previously known to authorities.

According to Mcfee, the suspect had a criminal history dating back to 2009, which included multiple charges of assault with a weapon, robbery and an incident last year involving a random assault on a 12-year-old child in Milwaukee.

“Everyone in Edmonton should be impacted by this. Everyone in our city should feel the unthinkable loss of a mother and child,” Mcfee said.

Police previously said it was reported that a man had attacked two people outside of Crawford Plains School before running away just before 5 p.m. on Friday. Officers found a 35-year-old woman dead and an injured 11-year-old child, police said. The child was taken to the hospital but died of their injuries.
