Water used to grow food and fibre could soon be re-allocated to boost the environment in Australia's largest river network.

It follows the Albanese government striking a deal with the Greens that would allow hundreds of gigalitres across the Murray-Darling Basin to be bought back from irrigators.

But farm groups say the deal leaves them worse off.
