Residents of India’s Delhi were grappling with the impacts of severe flooding on Thursday, after record rainfall triggered the swelling of a major river in the city.

The city of 20 million people has ordered the closure of all schools, colleges, and universities until Sunday and stopped non-essential government staff from coming to the office.

Hundreds of people living on the banks of the Yamuna River were seen wading in flooded roads, carrying belongings and animals through the floodwaters as supplies of drinking water are set to fall by a quarter on Thursday and Friday, according to the city government.

Since the monsoon season began on June 1, Delhi has recorded 113 per cent above-average rainfall, the India Meteorological Department said, and the rains in the hilly states to the north have fed the river's floodwaters, killing at least 88 people.
