Speaking in the House of Commons after the supreme court ruled the government's proposed Rwanda deportation scheme was unlawful, shadow home secretary, Yvette Cooper, alleged that the new home secretary, James Cleverly, had in private described the policy as 'batshit'. Pressed by broadcasters a day later, Cleverly, who replaced Suella Braverman after she was sacked by the prime minister, Rishi Sunak, repeatedly failed to deny using the phrase. His responses ranged from saying he 'doesn't recognise the phrase' to claiming the interviewer was falling into a trap laid by Labour
