Five Palestinians were killed and more than 90 people were wounded after Israeli soldiers raided a refugee camp in the northern West Bank on Monday, Palestinian officials said. The raid on the camp ignited the fiercest day of clashes in the region in years.

A 15-year-old Palestinian boy was among those killed in the raid. His family said he had been distraught over the death of a friend and had run at Israeli soldiers when they arrived at the camp.

“He is decent, polite, respectful but his problem was that the moment the (Israeli) army raided, he ran towards them. He wanted to (die) after his friend Omar was killed. The death of his friend Omar was very painful for him,” his father Yousef Saqer said.

Seven Israeli soldiers were also injured during the deadly raid, according to the army. The Israeli army brought in attack helicopters in what it said was an effort to push back gunmen while it extricated injured soldiers. Israeli media said the use of the helicopters was a 20-year first in the West Bank.

Visiting soldiers after the raid, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the efforts of Israeli troops, saying his country’s forces “strike terrorism with might and determination.”
