A 69-year-old Jewish man has died after he was involved in an altercation with a pro-Palestinian protester in Ventura County, Calif., the sheriff’s office said Tuesday.

Sheriff James Fryhoff said Paul Kessler, 69, died in hospital after falling backwards during the altercation and striking his head on the ground.

Fryhoff said the suspect remained at the scene and was cooperating with police and had called 911 for medical assistance.

Police have not ruled out the possibility of a hate crime and that his death was being investigated as a homicide, Fryhoff said.
