Tech company Microsoft has announced plans to spend five billion dollars in Australia, investing in artificial intelligence and working directly with cyber-security agencies.

The new deal headlines the first day of Anthony Albanese's visit to Washington DC.

It could get more complicated from here, as the Prime Minister tries to help steer laws critical to the AUKUS submarine deal, through the fractured US congress.
