Republican U.S. senator and former presidential candidate Mitt Romney announced on Wednesday that he won’t be seeking reelection in the upcoming 2024 U.S. presidential elections. He also said that he isn’t planning on endorsing anyone, but that he thought it “would be a great thing” if both President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump stood aside to let their respective parties pick younger candidates.

“I considered my age and the fact that at the end of the second-term I would be in my mid-80’s, and I think it’s time for guys like me to get out of the way and have the next generation step forward because they’re going to be shaping the world they’re going to be living in,” Romney said.

Asked if he thought that age should be a reason for his older colleagues to step down as well, Romney responded by saying that, “Everybody’s got to make their own decision of course, and consider their own circumstances.”

Reflecting on the state of the Republican party, Romney also described the party as being “in the shadow” of Trump, attributing this wing of the party as about resentment, settling scores and revisiting the 2020 election. “What are the policies for the future?” Romney asked.
