NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said new offers of support made by the alliance's members to Ukraine on Wednesday would help strengthen its hand in any potential peace negotiations with Russia, as NATO's summit in Vilnius drew to a close.

The United States and global allies unveiled new security assurances for Ukraine at a NATO summit on Wednesday, designed to bolster the country's defences against Russia over the long haul while Kyiv strives for membership of the alliance.

Stoltenberg highlighted allies had already provided tens of billions of dollars worth of military aid, and said the new promises including long-range cruise missiles and air defence systems would help Ukraine "liberate land so they will have a stronger hand at the negotiating table".

Stoltenberg also said the question of whether NATO would open a liaison office in Japan was "still on the table," and would be considered in the future.
