The prominent Russian dissident Alexei Navalny has been sentenced to 19 more years in prison by a Russian court. He was found guilty of extremism charges that his supporters say were just the latest attempt by the Kremlin to silence one of its most vocal critics.

Navalny is already serving a nine-year sentence on fraud and contempt of court convictions. The anti-corruption campaigner has been imprisoned at a notoriously brutal prison colony for two years now.

One of President Vladimir Putin's fiercest critics, Navalny is now facing a total of three decades behind bars.

Vladimir Ashurkov, the Executive Director of the Anti-Corruption Foundation and a long-time ally and colleague of Alexei Navalny, told DW that he believes the days of Putin's regime are numbered, and that Navalny would be freed much earlier than his 19 year prison sentence.
