Nigerian President Bola Tinubu said Thursday that all options — including force — remain on the table as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) met to discuss the military takeover in Niger.

Tinubu opened the summit of West African leaders by urging the bloc to prioritize diplomacy “as the bedrock” of its approach.

The leaders of the coup in Niger have so far given little indication they are prepared to back down or even engage in meaningful negotiations.

The military junta defied an Aug. 6 deadline set by ECOWAS to reinstate ousted president Mohamed Bazoum, instead closing Niger’s airspace and vowing to defend the country against foreign incursion.
