Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston provided an update on the firefighting efforts in the province as it continues to deal with an unprecedented wildfire situation on Friday, saying that a “stunning” number of homes had been lost.

“Through all this despair, through it all; zero deaths, zero missing persons, zero serious injuries. This says a lot about the professionalism of the first responders that are leading the response,” he said.

“No lives lost but an absolutely breathtaking amount of damage and many, many lives turned upside down.

During the same update Friday, officials urged people to stay out of the evacuation zone, adding that showing up in these areas can prevent firefighters from carrying out their important work.

Houston also announced a one-time grant of up to $2,5000 for small businesses in wildfire evacuation zones. He said it would help offset the costs of business closures.
