Ontario city of Belleville declares state of emergency over rash of drug overdoses

The southeastern Ontario city of Belleville declared a state of emergency Thursday after a rash of overdoses over 24 hours, including 13 cases in an hour.

No related deaths were reported, but local police urged people to stay away from the downtown core during a surge in ambulance traffic.

The city’s mayor is hoping the emergency declaration will free up more federal and provincial funding to help deal with the crisis.
