Fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor fled Moldova in 2019 to evade corruption charges and in April 2023, after a failed appeal, was sentenced in absentia to 15 years in jail. He says his trial was politically motivated.

The leader of the pro-Russia SOR Party has also been sanctioned by the US and EU for efforts to destabilize the Moldovan government and his party’s involvement “in the payment and training of persons in order to provoke disorder and unrest.”

Speaking to DW’s Tim Sebastian from Israel, Shor has no comment on Russian war crimes in Ukraine but says he is not afraid to criticize Moscow and “total neutrality” is “Moldova's only way to survive.”
