The Wagner mercenary group was entirely financed by the Russian state, which spent 86 billion roubles ($1 billion) on it between May 2022 and May 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting with security forces on Tuesday.

Putin also claimed that Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin, who led the group's brief mutiny last Saturday, made almost as much during the same period from his food and catering business.

Meanwhile, Moscow residents voiced respect for Prigozhin's strong personality while condemning the failed coup attempt on Tuesday, two days after Wagner mercenaries called off their mutiny.

"He is a normal man, but he is in the wrong spot. He should be in command of smaller detachments, I believe. He has taken too much on himself," Moscow resident Valery said.

The abrupt ending of the armed mutiny over the weekend by Prigozhin and his powerful Wagner Group saw no apparent penalties for the perpetrators or their leader on Monday, with other official moves to return the country to normal.
