Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude after the U.S. House of Representatives passed an aid bill for his country in its war against Russia on Saturday. The president said the support — still to be approved by the U.S. Senate — was a “very weighty package that will be felt by our soldiers on the front lines” and that it was a “decision to protect lives.”

Near the embattled eastern town of Kupiansk, where Russian forces are pressing, some Ukrainian artillery gunners said that it will be a “180-degree turn” once the aid package is confirmed, but speculated that Ukraine might have “lost a bit less ground” if the U.S. bill had been passed sooner.

In Kyiv, some Ukrainian citizens criticized the aid for “coming late,” while others said that Ukraine doesn’t “have a lot of options” except to “keep on fighting” with the aid that the country could get.

The aid bill provides $60.84 billion to address the conflict in Ukraine, including $23 billion to replenish U.S. weapons, stocks and facilities; $26 billion for Israel, including $9.1 billion for humanitarian needs, and $8.12 billion for the Indo-Pacific, including Taiwan. The Senate is expected to pass the measure next week, sending it to Biden to sign into law.
