Saskatoon emergency shelter plan draws stiff opposition from council and community

Saskatoon residents and city councilors lobbed a barrage of questions and concerns at provincial government representatives on Wednesday regarding a new, temporary 15-person emergency shelter.

After the provincial government submitted an application for it to be located there, the shelter is now set to be erected in place of a former liquor store on Idylwyld Dr. N.

When asked if the province would be conducting any public consultation with residents in the Mayfair area, or any consultation for future shelters, Saskatchewan's social services minister, Gene Makowsky, said people got that opportunity at the city council.

"The province plans to have a handoff process that will deliver clients to another agency established before the centre opens," he added.

A notice was sent out from the city on Nov. 15 regarding the shelter, but many residents said they didn’t see it until the following Friday — with others claiming they never received notice at all.

Furthermore, many residents said enough notice wasn't given and more public consultation was needed.
