The federal government has selected Hanwha's "Redback" IFV over Rheinmetall's rival "Lynx" design for the lucrative prize worth up to $7 billion.

The long-awaited decision puts in doubt a recent pledge by Berlin to acquire 100 new Australian-built Boxer combat reconnaissance vehicles built by Rheinmetall in Queensland.

Earlier this year Labor's Defence Strategic Review (DSR) drastically reduced the scope of the army's largest-ever project from an original 450 IFVs to just 129.
