François-Philippe Champagne, Canada's Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, said Tuesday that he’s “confident” the deal with Dutch manufacturing company Stellantis would go forward despite the company’s announcement Monday they had shut down production on a $5-billion electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant in Windsor, Ont.

However, he called on the Ontario government to “pay their fair share.”

“What we’re looking at now is production support. And what we’re saying is that we have consistently worked with our provincial partners to provide, on an equal basis, the support they need,” Champagne said.

“And what we’re saying now when we say ‘pay their fare share’ is to make sure that they would be with us in terms of production support.”

Stellantis, which manufactures Chrysler, Ram and Fiat cars among others, and South Korean battery-maker LG Energy Solution announced the plant last year and said it was expected to create 2,500 jobs.
