Suicide bombing kills at least 40, injures over 100 at Pakistan political rally

At least 40 people were killed and more than 130 injured when a suicide bombing tore through a political rally in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Sunday, police said. Dozens of blood-soaked, injured people arrived at a hospital in Bajaur, some being carried from the ambulances to the entrance.

Initially, police said there was no confirmation about the cause of the blast that took place at a gathering of the conservative Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) party — known for its links to hardline political Islam, in the former tribal area of Bajaur. But a police chief later confirmed it was a suicide bombing.

“Personally, l am safe, but my colleagues have suffered heavy losses,” Regional General Secretary of JUI-F Maulana Abdur-Rasheed said.

Pakistan has seen a resurgence of attacks by Islamist militants since last year when a ceasefire between the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Islamabad broke down.
