President Joe Biden reacted Friday to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that overturned his $400-billion plan to cancel or reduce federal student loan debt, saying millions of Americans were “disappointed or discouraged” by the decision.

Biden said that many Republicans who opposed debt relief for students were given “hundreds of thousands of dollars” under the Paycheck Protection Program, which helped businesses that lost money during the pandemic.

“The hypocrisy is stunning,” he said, claiming that his plan would have been good for the American economy. Biden said the court’s decision was a “mistake” and said he felt it had “misinterpreted the Constitution.”

When asked whether he had given “false hope” to millions of borrowers, Biden said, “Republicans had snatched away the hope they were given.” He added that his administration was working on a new student loan forgiveness plan that would instead be grounded in the Higher Education Act
