Victorian police say they've made a significant arrest over an alleged violent armed robbery in Melbourne's southeast, which has left a school student with life-altering injuries.

A 14-year-old, who police say is a youth gang member, was taken into custody as authorities reassured parents and kids that it is safe to walk to school.
