National Weather Service teams are assessing the damage Monday as emergency workers and community members grapple with the aftermath of a series of powerful storms and tornadoes that carved a path of destruction through parts of Tennessee over the weekend.

Six people were killed and tens of thousands were left without power after tornadoes swept through the region.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee called the devastation caused by the tornadoes “heartbreaking,” but praised the work of emergency crews and community members who came together to help those impacted.

“There’s a great wave of hope when you watch Tennesseans come alongside,” Gov. Lee said. “And that's what we witnessed today, as well as the pain and struggle and difficulty— bitter and sweet.”

Winter storm warnings are now in effect through late afternoon Monday across Vermont and New York, where up to 10 inches of snow are forecast.
