An updated national construction code will soon mandate the inclusion of EV charging capacity in all new buildings, but the process to make it available in existing buildings can be both expensive and logistically challenging.
The building in Canberra's inner north spent about $200,000 on the project, which involved rewiring work and the installation of a load management system to cope with the extra demand for power.
Individual owners then pay for their own charging, and so far about a third of the building's units have installed their own chargers.
Adam Scott and his family have bought two electric vehicles within the past year, but he said charging at public infrastructure became more difficult as more people began driving electric vehicles.
