"The era of global boiling has arrived:" UN chief warns amid hottest month in recorded history

UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned on Thursday that the era of global warming has ended and "the era of global boiling has arrived," after scientists said July was the world's hottest month on record.

"Climate change is here. It is terrifying, and it is just the beginning," he said. "For vast parts of North America, Asia, Africa and Europe, it's a cruel summer. For the entire planet, it is a disaster."

Guterres added the most vulnerable people and nations will be the most impacted by extreme weather events, like catastrophic flooding or wildfires, that are caused by climate change.

The World Meteorological Organization's State of the Climate report for 2022 noted that 2015 to 2022 were the eight warmest years on record in the 173-year instrumental record.
