Sean Durkin, the director behind the Zac Efron-led biopic about the legendary Von Erich wrestling family, said in an interview with Global News’ Kathryn Mannie that he was drawn to the tragic story because of the love between brothers – but also because of the questions it raises about masculinity.

‘The Iron Claw,’ which starts two of Hollywood’s buzziest actors in Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White, explores the epic highs and tragic downfalls of the iconic Von Erich wrestling family. Led by patriarch Fritz Von Erich (played by Holt McCallany), the movie follows the family as Fritz’s sons follow his footsteps into the ring.

The film tells a cautionary tale of toxic masculinity and intergenerational trauma, showing the lengths a son will go to in pursuit of his father’s dream and the ultimate price paid.

“What I was drawn to, and what I felt came out of the movie, was that even though this is an extreme version, and it came out of the past, it is still relevant,” says Durkin.

“And even though these ideas of masculinity have changed and things have gotten better, they’re still really harmful.”

‘The Iron Claw’ is out in theatres across Canada on Dec. 22.
