An unusual provision in Montana’s state constitution guarantees a “clean and healthful environment” to all residents. Now, a group of children in the state are suing the state — saying that their investment and reliance on fossil fuels actually violates their constitutional right.

In June, Held v Montana will become the first youth-driven climate lawsuit to make it to trial in the entire country, and could set a precedent nation-wide when it comes to how governments need to handle the climate crisis. Vice News met some of the plaintiffs in this landmark case to find out how suing your state could be a new approach to accountability.
