Title 42 ends: US officials expect surge as country limits asylum claims at Mexico border | FULL

U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said on Wednesday that departments and agencies are “surging” asylum officers to border patrol facilities as well as immigration and customs enforcement detention facilities in order to conduct an “unprecedented” number of anticipated credible fear screenings ahead of the lifting of Title 42 on Thursday.

“We are clear-eyed about the challenges we are likely to face in the days and weeks ahead, which have the potential to be very difficult. Even after nearly two years of preparation, we expect to see large numbers of encounters at our southern border in the days and weeks after May 11,” Mayorkas said in his opening remarks.

“Smugglers care only about profit, not people. They do not care about you or your well-being. Do not believe their lies. Do not risk your life and your life savings only to be removed from the United States if and when you arrive here,” Mayorkas added in a message to those considering a journey to the border.

The measure is a key part of President Joe Biden's plan to address an expected rise in illegal immigration when COVID-19 restrictions known as Title 42 end, along with the broader pandemic public health emergency. Title 42 was first implemented in March 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic to stem the spread of the coronavirus in crowded detention settings, allowing border agents to rapidly expel migrants to Mexico.

Its repeal is expected to lead to a rise in border arrivals as a result of pent-up demand and the perception among migrants that they will be let in.
