The main target of new spending in this Budget was the poorest in society - those struggling on unemployment benefits, or finding it impossible to pay the rent or visit the doctor. Labor says there are some measures that will help middle Australia. And with the Stage 3 tax cuts remaining in place, it's trying to keep faith with those at the top as well. All this – and a surplus to boot – made it a hard Budget for the Coalition to attack.

Liberals certainly tried, calling it inflationary and divisive. They want to blame the government for any further rise in interest rates.
