Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau provided an update at Parliament Hill regarding the ongoing wildfires sweeping the nation, focusing on Environment Canada's recent air quality advisories and his concerns for children's health.

The announcement follows mass air quality statements around the country, particularly Ontario, warning locals of high levels of air pollution and low visibility as a result of travelling wildfire smoke.

Alongside Trudeau, Minister of National Defence Anita Anand and Minister of Emergency Preparedness Bill Blair provided updates on the Armed Forces involved in combatting the blazes across Alberta, Nova Scotia and Quebec.

Minister of Indigenous Services Patty Hadju also provided an update on how the wildfire evacuations and smoke are impacting Indigenous communities and the climate across Canada.

Canada could see a “record” level of area burnt amid an “unprecedented” wildfire season this year and despite the “very serious projections,” the country is expected to have enough resources to cover the summer months, the prime minister said.
