Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Defence Minister Bill Blair announced Monday that they are updating the nation's defence policy.

The update will include raising spending on the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) by $7.9 billion over the next five years. The long-promised news will not, however, meet Canada's target under NATO.

By the end of the new plan, in the 2029-30 fiscal year, Canada is expected to be spending 1.76 per cent of GDP on defence, in a 2 per cent target.

The "Our North, Strong and Free defence policy" has been in the works since shortly after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. It replaces the current policy, "Strong, Secure, Engaged," which was unveiled in 2017 and sets out the military's priorities for 20 years.

Trudeau and Blair said with this new policy, the CAF need to address three major factors that are reshaping the world stage: climate change, Russia, China and rapidly evolving technology like artificial intelligence.
