Trudeau had “frank conversations” with Polish PM Morawiecki on LGBTQ2 rights, democracy | FULL

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki responded to questions from reporters in Toronto, Ont., on Friday after a joint bilateral meeting, as critics say the federal Liberals are keeping quiet about a democratic backslide in the European country.

“As friends, Canada and Poland will always have frank conversations on the things we're doing together and places where we raise concerns. I certainly raised concerns that we have around some of the reports coming out of Poland — around LGBT rights, around democracy. And we had a frank conversation often, as must be the case,” Trudeau said. “We will continue to work together on a broad range of things, but we will continue to be there to stand up for the values that matter as well.”

Morawiecki defended his country’s track record, saying that “the human rights and rights of LGBT people are not jeopardized at all. We very strongly put focus on nurturing families, supporting families, and sometimes it is misunderstood by some people as being discriminatory towards some other people, which is not the case.”

In other remarks, Trudeau also re-iterated his support for special rapporteur David Johnston, who was appointed in March to investigate allegations of foreign election interference. Saying that the leaders of the Conservative and Bloc Quebecois parties “continue to smear a man of unimpeachable integrity,” Trudeau also claimed that opposition party leader Pierre Poilievre is choosing “to fling mud and make personal attacks.”
