Despite implementing a carbon tax to incentivize “people and businesses to pollute less,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Thursday that his government would pause applying carbon pricing to home heating oil deliveries for three years in Atlantic Canada.

The announcement came amid pressures for Trudeau to axe the carbon tax as Canadians struggle to pay their bills and afford food.

Conservative opposition leader Pierre Poilievre, however, suggests the decision was made as Trudeau sits in “panic mode” as a federal election looms.

Though Trudeau said his government is “doubling down” on the fight against climate change, environmental advocates have expressed disappointment with the cause.
