British strikes against Houthis in Yemen were not proportionate and the UK was trying to turn the Red Sea into a 'sea of blood', Turkey's president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has said.

Erdoğan said the Houthis in Yemen were mounting a 'successful defence' against the US and the UK after they launched air and missile strikes in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen in what they said was an effort to halt attacks on ships in the Red Sea.

The UK and US said steps had been taken to minimise civilian casualties, partly by attacking at night, but it was unclear initially what damage had been done on the ground and the impact on the Houthi military and local population.
