President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sought to rally Ukrainians on Thursday at an official ceremony in Kyiv on Thursday as his embattled nation celebrated its second straight Independence Day amid Russia's full-scale invasion.

“We will empower Ukraine to the extent that it will be enough to always win. We will act harshly towards those who will try to destroy Ukrainian power from inside, siphon and weaken it,” he said.

The national holiday coincided with the 18-month mark of Moscow's war, which has killed tens of thousands of Ukrainians and ravaged wide swathes of land.
